Guest	The Alto was introduced in 1973. It was one of the first bit-slice maenihcs, using the Texas Instruments 74181 bit-slice processor. Multiple 74181s were linked together to form a microcoded 16-bit processor. Bit-slice architecture is well-suited to multitasking, which is what the machine was designed to do. It had the first graphical user interface of any production computer- it would later form the basis of the X Window System, which is still in use today.
