Бегемот

Обыкновенный бегемот, или гиппопотам (лат. Hippopotamus amphibius) — крупное травоядное млекопитающее из отряда парнокопытных, подотряда свинообразных (нежвачных), семейства бегемотовых. До настоящего времени сохранилось два вида, принадлежащих к этому семейству. Второй, кроме гиппопотама, вид — карликовый бегемот (Choeropsis liberiensis). Научное название является латинизированной формой греческого слова ἱπποπόταμος, означающего «речной конь». Несмотря на это название, бегемот связан таксонометрическим родством не с лошадьми, а, как то ни кажется странным на первый взгляд, с китообразными и, чуть более отдалённо, со свиньями и пекари.
